How AI led Context-Aware Computing Can Power the Next Generation of Smart Apps?

The fields of artificial intelligence and deep learning have witnessed monumental progress in the past few years with some pioneering technologies set to transform the way we live our lives. From changing how businesses are run and making them more efficient to making cars intelligent enough that they can drive themselves, AI never fails to amaze us with its unlimited potential and prowess over combining the processes of digital computing and algorithms to forge together crucial memory architectures based on layers of neural information networks.
But how can AI become more personal to humans and augment their life experiences? Is there a medium to make available a critically intelligent personal assistant that knows what we want it to do and how we want to do it powered by AI?
The way and the medium both are apps, as it is the promising platform for AI to endear itself to humans and become indispensable. The mobile platform is growing due to its wide appeal to the masses and the number of apps downloaded is also growing consequently as a result of this.
Nearly 268 billion apps have been downloaded by 2017 and the number is expected to groweven further because apps provide an unmatched level of personalization of experience and make it easier to do a variety of tasks. Each interaction with an app will be recorded as data and will be further used to make for a better experience the next time you visit that specific app. With Artificial Intelligence, we can substantially improve not just the customization aspect of apps but allow them to interact with us rather than remain as a smart but subservient servant.
This shift from servant to assistant can only be made possible through AI-powered apps and the key to it all is intelligent context-aware computing. Previously, mobiles predicted based on the data they already had to take a guess at what you wanted out of it, but it didn’t understand what “Present” was and how we needed to use it to understand and comply with situation specific information processing needs.
Google’s latest feature i.e. Google Now on Tap, is something of similar nature and although it is at a very early stage of “being conscious”, it still is a crucial transformation that will make the app experience better. You can activate Google’s Now On Tap to access a wide variety of information on what you are doing at the moment, like for e.g. your friend emails you about a good a movie he/she watched recently and while reading that email you can just Tap on your Home Button and activate the feature which will bring back the trailer of the movie, reviews from different critics, cinema timings and more. You can then go back to doing what you were doing in that moment. The Feature “Reads” the content and scans for specific keywords and understands its context before providing you with the results.
Intelligent Apps are also transforming the retail landscape as they allow for an unprecedented opportunity to interact with the shopper and then provide accurate shopping suggestion, leading to an immersive and more satisfying shopping experience. Many retailers around the world have started to combine the power of AI and apps to improve their business considerably.
One of the most notable examples of Intelligent Apps already transforming the way customers shop is the GWYN app, which serves the florist and gift company 1-800-FLOWERS.com. Powered by IBM’s Watson system, GYWN makes gift suggestions based on a series of qualifying questions through processing natural language. It can process queries like “I am looking for a gift for my mother” and then provide customized suggestion ideas for gifts to customers. The massive appeal of these intelligent apps to users is down to these very reasons. AI led context-aware computing is partly conscious in the present situation of the user and makes it easier to find a solution or a suggestion to the user’s query by understand and responding in real time.
The Global artificial intelligence market is set to grow exponentially in the upcoming decade, going up from a global market valuation of just $126 billion in 2015 to an unprecedented $3 trillion by 2024 and apps are not behind either in terms of user popularity as apps will come to dominate Google, the world’s most popular search engine, in 2017 as mobile first indexing and app indexing allows user to find apps more easily. Combining these two markets would enable both of them not just to grow fast but change the dynamics of customized user experience for a better and much more powerful user assistance system.
